The Virginia Association of Health Plans (VAHP) is a non-profit trade organization committed to enhancing the acceptance and understanding of managed health care as a high quality, cost-effective option for providing comprehensive health care benefits to Virginia citizens. As the voice for Virginia’s health plans, VAHP represents 15 managed care health insurance plans which together provide coverage to more than 3.4 million managed care plan enrollees in Virginia. Established in 1988 as the Virginia Association of Health Maintenance
Organizations, the Association broadened its mission and changed its name in 1998. VAHP provides advocacy, education, and research services to its member plans and also serves the community with initiatives to increase the public’s understanding of how managed care plans provide quality, affordable health care benefits to their members. The Association is committed to cultivating an environment that facilitates private sector health care solutions and generates a number of health information resources to assist stakeholders in understanding the latest issues and current marketplace in which managed health care plans work. As one of the five founding members of the VIPC&S Coalition, VAHP believes that all involved in the health care system have an obligation to work together to eliminate medical errors, identify best practices, and improve health outcomes.
