Doctors Insurance Reciprocal, Risk Retention Group (DIR), a leading medical malpractice insurer headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, specializing in professional and general liability insurance for physicians.

DIR was created with the support of Reciprocal of America (formerly The Virginia Insurance Reciprocal), a Virginia-based professional liability insurance company established in 1977. After several years of insuring hospitals, ROA began its highly successful Physicians Insurance Program. Then in 1990, ROA promoted the creation of DIR, and a unique concept in physician malpractice insurance was born.

DIR is governed by a Board of Directors composed of physicians active in their areas of specialty. The Board of Directors is assisted by The Council of Governors, which is comprised of representatives from a number of component and specialty societies. In addition, DIR has several active committees whose members serve as advocates for other practicing physicians, ensuring DIR remains responsive to physicians' needs.

A team of highly skilled insurance professionals provides the day-to-day management of DIR.  Claims services are provided by staff with an average of 15 years experience in defending medical malpractice cases. DIR utilizes only the most experienced defense attorneys and will not settle a claim without the consent of the physician.

Risk Management services offer education, consultation, physician support and research on current medical/legal risks. A variety of educational programs are provided to insured physicians using “state-of- the-art” delivery methods such as web-based education and video conferencing. CME credit is awarded for most Risk Management activities.

DIR provides superior services at competitive prices while understanding the needs of its clients. As an owner insured company, DIR’s products and services are designed for medical professionals by medical professionals. This provides DIR with one of its greatest strengths - flexibility and responsiveness to physicians' needs.
